The Rock to join the Justice League?
March 27 — It appears that DC is in negotiations with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson to bring Green Lantern John Stewart to the big screen.
It’s no secret that the 2011 Green Lantern movie underperformed at the box office. But if news out of Hollywood is to be believed, DC isn’t ready to give up on the property. Studio bosses are reportedly determined to make Green Lantern a franchise as stable (and profitable!) as the Superman and Batman franchises. Could The Rock provide such a stable foundation?
Johnson had been in discussion to play Lobo in a standalone film — think Wolverine meets Seth McFarlane — before Warner Brothers studio heads decided they could better use Johnson’s enduring popularity to reinvigorate the Green Lantern franchise. The studio appears to be hoping that adding “The People’s” Green Lantern to the cast, alongside Ryan Reynolds’s Hal Jordan and Mark Strong’s Sinestro, will add a little extra box office power bomb.
The Big Question for fans is whether this cast shuffling will have any effect on the struggling Justice League movie. If The Rock signs a long-term contract, will John Stewart be the Justice League$rsquo;s knight in shining green armor? We’ll be watching what DC is cooking!
