52 Titles Not Enough for Adequate Batman Coverage

February 22 — Every few months, DC Comics cancels a few underperforming titles in order to make room for new titles. It seems that is no longer good enough.

“We’re trying to create long-term fiction with Batman. In doing so, we want to make sure these things are as compelling as they can be from stage to stage, point to point, and that people ride along all the way with us,” said Dan DiDio as part of the announcement that DC would be releasing more Batman titles.

While sales indicate that fans want more Batman, not everyone is happy about the changes. “Short of changing the title to Batstorm, there’s only so much you can do,” tweeted Dan Jurgens, whose Firestorm was among the most recent cancellations.

Plans are already underway by Greg Pak and Jae Lee to release Batman/Superman this summer. In coming months, DC will be releasing up to five more ongoing Batman-related titles. Titles are still merely rumours at this point, but we can expect some of the titles to be chosen from among several long-rumoured Batman Family, Batman and The Outsiders, Batman and Nightwing, Neal Adams’s Batman: Lunacy, Denny O’Neil’s Batzrael, Lord of Gotham, Face of the Joker, Smell of the Batman, NBC crossover Celebrity Apprentice: Batman Edition, or Spoiler Alert.
